A Clogged Drain is No Joke! Here’s What to Do

|

A functional plumbing system doesn’t just supply clean water and dispose of waste; it also protects the health of your household. Clogged drains cause a sewage overflow which might, in turn, cause dangerous and severe health issues due to the bacteria and the harmful substances present in them. Clogged drains are a severe health hazard, and they should be dealt with promptly to avoid other plumbing emergencies.

Here are a few ways to unclog a drain.

Shower & Tub Drain

When it comes to unclogging a shower and tub drain, the main issue is removing the stopper. While some plugs are easy to remove, others require a screwdriver to unscrew them. If you don’t feel comfortable unscrewing the stopper or have some questions, call our local plumbers from Smart Plumbers Inc. to help you out or answer any questions you might have.

Plumbing Snake

After the unscrewing has been done, the next step is to use a plumbing snake if you have one. Feed the plumbing snake into the clogged drain till it hits the blockage, and turn its handle clockwise. This will attach the plumbing snake to the clog and make it easy for you to pull the clog out. If you don’t have a plumbing snake at home, you can also use a bent wire or a hanger.

Plunger

You can deal with a shower or tub clog by using a plunger. Fill the shower with water until the plunger’s rubber is fully covered with water. Then, start moving the plunger up and down without breaking the seal. The pressure from the plunger will help loosen up whatever is clogging the drains. A word of advice, don’t use the same plunger that you use for your toilet.

Bathroom Sink

A Bathroom Sink Drain

You can unclog the bathroom sink drain using the baking soda method, a natural home remedy. Mix ⅓ cup of baking soda and ⅓ cup of vinegar. Let the mixture sit for at least an hour before flushing it out with boiling water. If vinegar isn’t available, half a cup of table salt and a half cup of baking soda is just as effective.

If this doesn’t work, then it means that the clog is located somewhere deep, and it’s time to call in a plumbing service like Smart Plumbers Inc. to help you with your plumbing emergencies.
