As water drains from the bathroom sink basin via the P-Trap, it draws air from the outside vent to equalize the pressure. If the rooftop vent is blocked by snow or some other debris, then the trap seal could be sucked out by draining the water. When this happens, you might hear a gurgling sound as air is pulled through the sink drain. Thus, giving off a lousy sewer odor via the bathtub drain.
S-Traps are similar to P-Traps but are no longer installed in homes because they can lose the trap seal. If enough water travels through the S-Trap, it will create a continued channel through the pipe and siphon the Trap’s water.
Fortunately, the S-Trap can be retrofitted into a P-Trap. Also, a build-up of hair and other debris can create problems along the pipe and cause water to dissipate out of the Trap by capillary action slowly. This is why it is essential to keep the P-Trap clear of debris.
