How To Tell If You Have a Leak

How To Tell If You Have a Leak

Plumbing leaks can be a frustrating problem for homeowners. While some leaks are visible to the untrained eye, leaks can also occur behind walls and ceilings where we may not be able to detect them instantly. If you suspect that your plumbing is leaking, you can hire our plumber in San Jose.

Intrusive tree roots, high water pressure, and clogged pipelines are all common causes of leaks in residential plumbing. Here’s how you can tell if you have a leak in your plumbing.

1. You have an unusually high water bill

If your latest water bill is higher than it usually is, you might have a leak in your plumbing. Even small cracks in the piping can lead to huge water losses, which is bad both for the environment and your wallet.

The American Environmental Protection Agency recommends that homeowners check their water usage to determine if any leaks could be contributing to a higher water bill. If your water usage is higher than normal, this could mean that excess water is being lost through a crack in your pipes.

2. Check your water meter

First, turn off all running taps in your home, Turn off your kitchen faucet, your washing machine, and your dishwasher, and make sure no one is running a bath or taking a shower. Then go and check your water meter. If the reading on the water meter has changed immediately, this is a sign that you have a huge leak out of which water is probably gushing out at high speed. If it hasn’t changed, wait for two hours and then check the reading again. If the reading has changed this time, this could mean that you have a leak, but you’re losing water at a slower rate. Either way, reach out to your plumber and get the leak fixed.

3. Try this food coloring hack

Use a dropper to add a few drops of food coloring to your toilet tank. If the color shows up in the toilet bowl, this means you have a leak that’s allowing the water to flow from the tank to the bowl.
